Red ginseng: benefits, history and modern use of the ancestral adaptogen

Red ginseng is one of the most renowned medicinal plants in the world. Used for over 3,000 years in Asia, it is now recognized by modern science for its effects on energy, focus, stress and overall vitality.

What is red ginseng?

Red ginseng comes from the root of Panax ginseng, native to North-East Asia. It is not a different variety, but ginseng transformed by a traditional process: after several years of cultivation, the roots are steam-cooked then slowly dried. This natural process increases the concentration and diversity of ginsenosides, its main active compounds — resulting in a more potent, more stable, better-assimilated ginseng.

Origin and history

A sacred plant for over 3,000 years, red ginseng has been used for millennia in traditional Chinese and Korean medicine as a general tonic and longevity plant, historically reserved for emperors, warriors, sages and healers. Its scientific name comes from the Greek panax, "universal remedy".
